8 Epic Famous People That Are From Medellin
I said famous, not infamous.
By Kaveh Paymayesh
What is Medellin famous for?
Its people, obviously! Seriously though, how many prominent figures can you count?
If you can fit them all into one hand – great! By the end of this article, you’ll be able to count them on two…
Here are 8 epic famous people that have called Medellin home:
1. J Balvin
Born in 1985, Medellin. That’s the same year leftist guerillas seized the Palace of Justice in Bogota. A very tumultuous year for the country.
How is José Álvaro Osorio Balvín epic?
They don’t call him the “Prince of Reggaeton” for nothing. J Balvin is one of the best selling Latin artists with over 35 million record sales. On Spotify, he currently has 52 million monthly listeners.
I don’t use the word EPIC lightly. In 2020, Mr Balvin was included on Time magazine’s index of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Whether or not you like his music, this man exerts significant influence over the reggaeton genre. He has collaborated with other prominent artists such as Cardi B, Bad Bunny, Dj Khaled and Liam Payne.
J Balvin did leave Medellin in the early 90s to resettle in the US. He came back and today continues to call Medellin home.

3 BILLION VIEWS!
2. David Ospina
Born in 1988, Itagüí. Ospina has climbed the ranks to become a world-class goalkeeper. His humble beginnings take him back to none other than Atletico Nacional.
Nowadays he represents Colombia in the national squad. He remains the country’s keeper of choice.
Ospina has flourished under the banner of some of Europe’s top clubs (if you want to count Arsenal). Today, he plays for the same club that Maradona once did, Napoli.
While he isn’t revered to the same extent as Maradona, he has won over the affection of his supporters. Not something that is easy when dealing with Italians (Napolitanos)! That alone makes him an epic, famous Paisa.
Despite playing in Italy, Ospina still visits his hometown of Medellin.
Did you know that Ospina was once brother-in-law to James Rodriguez?
3. Juanes
Juanes, which is not his real name (Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez), was born in 1972. He grew up in Medellin during its most violent years – the Escobar era.
Juanes’ formative years were shaped by the brutality unfolding around him. Ruthless kidnappers murdered his cousin, his close friend was also executed. If those weren’t bad enough, Juanes’ father succumbed to cancer.
Surrounded by misery, things got so bad for himself, Medellin and Colombia, that he believed they could only get better… He was right.
Despite taking inspiration from traditional Colombian genres, such as Vallenato, Juanes ultimately did his own thing. His rocky riffs distinguished him from typical Colombian music.
It was a bold decision that proved to be fruitful.
So how is Juanes EPIC?
1.) His early-life ordeal was one that he took on his stride. He overcame hardships that many could never imagine. Observing the radiant energy of Juanes, you’d never know how dark his childhood was.
2.) He went against the grain of popular Colombian genres – a worthwhile risk that we can all learn from.
3.) His music is as amazing as it is widespread. Have you heard La Camisa Negra?
4.) Juanes is bilingual. He learnt English as a young man. That’s after the so-called ‘critical cut-off age’ for fluency. He’s been an epic inspiration for me in my Spanish endeavours.
Here’s a lovely song by the Medellinense – what a don!
4. Fernando Botero
Ay, if there was just one individual on this list that has left their mark in Medellin, it is Botero.
Born in 1932, Botero is a living legend, alive and well at 89 years old.
Botero is a cultured man, having studied in Spain and lived in Paris. Regardless of distance, he would make annual returns to his home of Medellin.
I’m not sure if things changed as he enters his advanced years. Even if not there in person, his artistic vision is firmly embodied throughout the streets of Medellin.
After all, it was him that realized the most emblematic tourist hotspot in the city, Plaza Botero.
Fernando Botero has left his artistic trademark within the city, known as “Boterismo”. The sculptures are not hard to identify; they are characteristically voluptuous.
So why is Botero epic?
Medellin isn’t the only place you’ll find his work. His work is internationally recognized and visible in significant places.
Botero’s signature sculptures can be found in Cali, Dubai, Paris and New York.

If the Arabs want his sculptures to embellish the land, then you best believe the Paisas are proud.
5. Maluma
Maluma’s well-groomed face is adored worldwide. But that’s not why he makes it onto this list of EPIC famous people.
Maluma, born in 1994, has enjoyed a prospering career in music. His contribution to reggaeton has helped crystallize the genre’s footprint in Western markets. He has collaborated with big names such as Madonna and Shakira.
Still young, the model & singer continues to diversify his portfolio. Who knows what the future holds for this ambitious Paisa?
UPDATE: Maluma featured in Walt Disney’s Encanto (2021).
6. Nicky Jam
Nicky Jam was born in Massachusetts and raised in Puerto Rico. So why is he on this list?
Well, his own story, in ways, mirrors that of Medellin’s – a story of rebirth and revival. Nicky Jam is indebted to the city that he insists helped him abandon drugs and launch his world-class career.
The Nicky Jam that we all know, the one that has flourished, was born in Medellin.
The epic list
1.) He dominated the reggaeton scene from 2015 to 2019
2.) He overcame hardships: drug use, legal & financial trouble, a sinking career. He even climbed up to 136kg.
3.) Medellin was the city that helped him flip his life around. He tweaked his music, lost 45kg (100lbs) and quit drugs. Much of that he claims was due to the love he received in Medellin.
4.) Nicky Jam is very public about how much he loves the city. Undoubtedly, he has been instrumental in shifting public opinion on Medellin.
As somebody coming to Medellin with the endeavour of self-growth – this man inspires me!
7. Karol G
The last musician on this list, I promise! Music seems to be the forte of Paisas.
Carolina Giraldo Navarro, born in 1991, is another Medellínense that specializes in reggaeton.
What’s different about Karol G is that she’s not a dude. Women aren’t as prevalent in the reggaeton industry.
Things are changing though. We’ve passed the days of overt misogyny in Latin urban music. Big up Karol G for helping lay down the groundwork.
How did she make it onto the list of epic famous people?
- She has over 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify
- She also helped to expand reggaeton into English markets
- She has collaborated with other big names like Nicki Minaj & Bad Bunny
- She garners billions of views on YouTube. Many of which are coming from the US.
Yeah, I’m not going to lie, I dislike her music. Not to my gusto.
8. Víctor Gaviria
Victor Gaviria is Colombia’s most influential and globally recognized film director.
Gaviria was the first Colombian film director to be recognized in the Cannes Film Festival – 1 of Europe’s 3 major film festivals.
What makes his work so profound, so notable?
Gaviria, like many Colombians, grew up in a nation torn apart by violence. In his work, he flawlessly depicts the social issues of his country.
His most famous film, Vendedora de Rosas, is a fine example of his ability to highlight the issues faced in Medellin.
It has been dubbed as one of the most influential movies to come out of Colombia.
His work transcends entertainment. Rather, it provides an international insight into the issues that his country faced. Gaviria’s movies have moved millions of viewers.
Much of his work is known for its use of ‘natural’ actors.
In La Vendedora de Rosas, the majority of the cast were simply sharing their reality on the streets. There wasn’t much acting going on.
